Step by step crochet for beginners

  • Are you a complete beginner at crochet and never crocheted before? (or tried but keep getting stuck?)

  • Are you confused by the shorthand and jargon in crochet patterns and want to understand what it all means?

  • Are you tired of piecemeal YouTube videos and want a comprehensive course that explains everything you need to know?

If so, then this free course is for you. I’ll guide you through the steps, building on new techniques and stitches each day so that you can teach yourself crochet. And you’ll not only learn crocheting stitches for beginners, but you’ll learn how to understand them within a pattern.

I’ve designed this crochet bow headband pattern, specifically for this course, which strategically introduces new crochet stitches to build your skills while you work the pattern. We’ll walk through the pattern together, learning the stitches as you go, so you see how it all fits together. Learning to crochet isn’t difficult, it just takes practice!

At the end of the 5 day course, you’ll have built all of the skills to pick up any beginner crochet pattern to start making your own crochet tops, handbags, home accessories and more!

Learn To Read Crochet Patterns

If you’ve ever read a crochet pattern, it can look like a different language. It’s filled with abbreviations and shorthand instructions that can be overwhelming for beginners. Instead of just re-writing the jargon to be beginner-friendly, I teach you how to read it.

After this course, this means you’ll be able to go out and pick up any crochet pattern and start creating. The world of what you can make just opens up and the possibilities are endless!

Beginner Crochet Videos

What all does the crochet course cover?

This comprehensive beginner course covers all of the fundamentals, slowly building your skills each day as you teach yourself to crochet online. I’ve done all of the work to pull together the essentials for you in an easy to understand format, so you don’t have to hunt down individual techniques on your own. Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • How to read a crochet pattern and understand the instructions, start to finish

  • How to choose the right yarn and hook for your project

  • Understanding gauge and how to swatch

  • Basic crochet stitches including chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet and increases/decreases

  • The difference between flat crochet and crochet in the round

  • Beginner mistakes and how to avoid them

  • How to do the magic circle (and when to use it)

  • How to start a project and how to fasten off

  • Blocking techniques

  • How to seam two edges together

What Materials Will You Need?

  • Worsted weight yarn. You’ll use less than one 50g ball, and can even use leftover scraps you might have on hand. I do not recommend using cotton or linen yarn, as these are harder to work with for beginners. Wool is my favorite, but acrylic works too.

  • Crochet Hook: Size H/8 (US) – 5.00mm

  • Yarn needle for weaving ends and seaming

  • For blocking: Straight pins (or blocking pins), a piece of cardboard, and a clean towel
